Dialogue, Difference & Democracy Seminar Series

Join Ideos Institute and the National Institute for Civil Discourse on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 for the 4th in our 6-part series, Dialogue, Difference and Democracy, a series that brings together experts in the field of dialogue to promote practices, norms, and tools related to democracy promotion, social cohesion, conflict transformation, and human flourishing.

Leading this seminar will be Deanna Troust, founder of Truth in Common, an organization tackling issues of misinformation and disinformation by translating disinformation and social division research into skills people can use at home, at work and in the community. Through workshops, a newsletter, talks and partnerships, we create safe, brave spaces where people learn about information manipulation, how to access the information they need and feel comfortable talking again — respectfully.

In this seminar, Deanna will share Truth in Common’s work on:

  • The difference between mis- and disinformation and the risks to our communities, businesses and relationships if we let falsehoods spread, unchecked.

  • How mis- and disinformation became an everyday phenomenon; the anatomy of a disinformation campaign.

  • The psychology and behavioral science behind the spread of mis- & disinformation epidemic, and, how to find information sources you can trust — on the local, as well as the national, level.

  • How to support facts and factual sources — “the art of respectful push-back.” — online and in person. How to curb in-group/out-group thinking and find the courage to re-engage in meaningful conversations with others.

Evangelical Peacemaking Movements w/The Telos Group

Watch the panel recording here.

As nearly 30% of the U.S. electorate, the evangelical Christian community in the U.S. has the opportunity for massive impact on issues of justice, reconciliation, and peace. But these communities have often neglected the call to be peacemakers, as laid out in Matthew 5:9. Can evangelical communities reclaim this call and be a force for peace?

Join us to hear an esteemed panel of Christian leaders who are working in evangelical communities to do just that. We’ll hear about the movements they lead that are healing conflict and changing the script on injustice, and discuss how local leaders can shepherd their communities into the work of peacemaking.

Moderating will be Telos team member David Katibah. Panelists Christy Vines: President and CEO, Ideos; Jenny Yang: Senior Vice President of Advocacy & Policy, World Relief; Martin Brooks: President, Peace Catalyst International; and Andrew Hanauer: President and CEO, One America Movement
