DAY FOUR

  • 38 You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. 43 You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Our spiritual journey begins with revelation, a new understanding of ourselves through the eyes of our Creator. We discover who we are, who we have been created to be, and who we can become through the love of Christ. This starting place creates space to hear from God, to gaze upon the beauty of God’s kingdom, and to gain sober judgment of ourselves. We seek truth in reflection, and we surrender ourselves to God’s call of repentance that always precedes our rebirth and healing. We lament together for the ways in which we have fallen short of God’s glory. We grieve the brokenness in ourselves, the church, and the world around us.

As you reflect on the passage for the day, ask yourself these questions:

  • What is God revealing to you about God’s nature?

  • Is there a call to repentance in this passage?

  • What is the Spirit showing you in this passage that we need to be encouraged by or challenged with?


TODAY’S PRAYER

Lord, reveal the ways in which we have failed to live in obedience to you and to love one another as the children of God. We long to be unified through your love and to live as the body of Christ. Renew our hearts and minds through your unending love, and give us the courage to surrender ourselves to your Spirit this day. Amen
